Old Movie Reviews

I found a few of my old reviews from my time on LEGO Flickr (I would build LEGO characters from the movie and post them with my review in the description. My first one was of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, but it has unfortunately been lost to time. INTERSTELLAR Spoiler Warning! I thought this film would turn out to be one of those films where a family is separated and then they reunite. This didn't go that way and this film showed the tragedy of this character missing out on his children's lives and developed the relationship he had with his children. It showed a future civilization that was realistic, talked about its problems and the effect they had on people. I also loved the robots, and their designs were very unique. Some people complain about the exposition, but I think the fact they were on a mission for the sake of humanity itself and wanted to be careful excuses that. The sound was very powerful when it stopped in several scenes and the music added to the e...

Casual Witterings #1

Hullo I was watching more Steven Universe. The show is musical and there was one song that I keep listening to ( Love and Death and Life and Birth ). It’s just really beautiful, both in character interactions and in general. Though, watching more of the show, I do have concerns that the show, in its laudable effort to promote body-positivity, promotes unhealthy eating. Steven is constantly eating junk food and the like. So is Amethyst, a main character, though her alien nature renders her immune to the bad effects. Although, I personally believe that not everything in a kid’s show needs to be a lesson or that every decision needs to justify itself. I was re-watching the finale of season five, a big moment for the series and I could understand detractors of the series. I think that what they were attempting was good conceptually, it just could have been executed better. As with many others, I also know Rebecca Sugar (the creator and runner of Steven Universe) from her sp...

Thoughts on various media I've seen lately

Flowers for Algernon is a book ahead of its time. It features the low-key sci-fi concept of altering a mentally disabled man’s intelligence, unintentionally setting him on a personal journey. This story is about empathy and the treatment of the disabled. In addition to a greater societal piece, it is also merely about the protagonist’s changes and development. Breaking Bad is a series about one person who gained life and another who lost it. It's a gripping tragedy, with the protagonist being an embodiment of a dissatisfaction towards society, a semi-common state of mind. It’s about the common feeling by some that society has wronged them. It's about a man who drags all he supposedly loves into hell. Star Wars is a culturally significant sci-fi escapist monster of a franchise. The original trilogy features its spin-off media, faced with varied reactions. Though some obscure novels/tv shows have received acclaim, both the prequels and sequels are seen as terrible. However, t...

Bandersnatch / Doctor Who / Adventure Time

The implication of Bandersnatch is the long-debunked and harmful notion that suffering creates great art. It is trivializing to suffering to present it as necessary. Its application in the story is poorly thought-out, much like everything else. Its supposedly novel concept is simply a generic choice-based video game; its failure to note this metafictionally lessens the story. Simply put, it’s far less smart than it thinks it is. Doctor Who is a famous and far-reaching series. It managed to capture a genuine wonder for the universe, with many frequently changing elements. It is both escapism and a reflection of our reality. However, Doctor Who cannot escape its greatest problem; it finds itself dependent on nostalgia life-support. Adventure Time details an evolution of surrealism. In kids' shows, this was first an unintentional byproduct of animation’s inherent disconnect from reality, and that it is primarily aimed at kids. This reinvents that, merging it with philosophy and ge...
