Old Movie Reviews

I found a few of my old reviews from my time on LEGO Flickr (I would build LEGO characters from the movie and post them with my review in the description.

My first one was of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, but it has unfortunately been lost to time.

INTERSTELLAR
Spoiler Warning!
I thought this film would turn out to be one of those films where a family is separated and then they reunite. This didn't go that way and this film showed the tragedy of this character missing out on his children's lives and developed the relationship he had with his children. It showed a future civilization that was realistic, talked about its problems and the effect they had on people. I also loved the robots, and their designs were very unique. Some people complain about the exposition, but I think the fact they were on a mission for the sake of humanity itself and wanted to be careful excuses that. The sound was very powerful when it stopped in several scenes and the music added to the emotional scenes. There were some details in the film I missed and a few problems I found in the film though. One line that bothered me was "by the time I get back, we might be the same age". I think that line was something the character would never say. I also think the scenes with Matt Damon's character could have been shortened. Spoilers end! That was my thoughts I had on the movie.

HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY
Rating: 6.5/10 Some parts of this movie were utterly fantastic. It was very faithful to the source material. I know there are a lot of people who think that the Hunger Games in mediocre, but this movie differs most away from the Battle Royale element people have been criticizing. It shows the political problems and doubts of the rebellion and more characters are introduced well. Gale is a step up from his one dimensional book counterpart and the changes that are made to the book, if any, are very logical changes. There were some scenes, like when some citizens fight off the guards after being inspired by Katniss, which were brilliant. My main problem with the film is that it’s split into two parts, when it really doesn’t need to be. I’m usually the first to defend a movie spilt into parts, but not this time. There is a lot of filler in this movie and so many parts are dragged out. Sometimes, it felt like the actors were just saying their lines as slowly as possible to increase the runtime. I understand them not wanting to cram in too much into 1 movie, but this movie didn’t need to be the length it was. Overall, I would recommend this movie.

THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES
Many people were looking forward to this film, including myself. It was the film I looked most forward to for the entire year. The first two were flawed, second more than first, but I still liked them. This film was going to be based off of my favourite part of the book! What did I think of it? It was great! But flawed. I loved the conflict created, and how each character was righteous in their own way. Even Thorin, to an extent had a good argument; he watched the elves completely abandon his kind when they needed the elves. I love that stuff. Bard’s role is expanded, and when the battle scenes start, I’m really into the film. When they drag on however, It makes me think of the build-up in the last film that wasn’t answered. Beorn appeared, but extremely briefly and the buisness for Sauron and Gandalf at Dol Guldur is extremely brief. The changes made are strangely bizarre. There are some good ones, like Bard’s expansion and were-worms that provide transportation for the orcs. Most of them seem to be made mostly because they could change them. It seems like poorly written fanfiction. Alfrid is another addition to the story; the servant to the Lake-Town master, he has several scenes, all of which pointless. Then there is Tauriel. The character that was not in the book, and shares the same ethical flaws as the Little Mermaid: throwing your life away for someone you just met. You’ll either love her or not love her. I don’t like her. I don’t despise her, because her character does show that she wants to help the world outside of Mirkwood and does have a reason, but she is dull. I don’t see why they needed to include her. Her scenes with the robotic Orlando Bloom and especially with Kili just took me out of the story each time they appeared. (Spoilers start I would have loved to see the Arkenstone placed on Thorin’s body for some closure and a slow death scene, other than an unintelligible speech. Spoilers end) Overall I really liked the movie. The flaws that were in two and one are present in this film and they do bother me, but for me personally, I just love the characters and the conflict so much that they overweigh the bad. For me I’d give it 8/10. I’d recommend you to watch it yourself and give it your own rating.

SPONGEBOB: SPONGE OUT OF WATER
Good, bad, terrible, great and similar words are all words incapable of classifying this film. It is yet another film that believes it can throw random jokes at you and expect you to laugh at them due to the surrealness factor. I am a huge SpongeBob fan. The first three seasons and movie were funny, charming and surprisingly had a sophisticated element to it. That was lost with the atrocities that are the later seven seasons. With suicide jokes and ripped toenails, the spirit of SpongeBob was lost. I prayed that this film may redeem SpongeBob. My prayers were not answered, well not entirely. There are some elements and jokes in the film that work, but the main problem that this movie and modern SpongeBob has are the characters. A character’s main character trait is exaggerated until it becomes their only character trait. This results in the character losing their personality and being extremely out of character. This is a great example of poor writing. For example Patrick is stupid but they make him incredibly stupid and jokes of his stupidity are all they can do with the character. This makes his personality transform from a charming and loveable starfish to an annoying and evil abomination. The majority of the characters suffer from this: Mr. Krabs is an amoral monster, SpongeBob is an annoying idiot (Where did him being stupid come from anyway? I thought that was Patrick’s shtick) and Patrick is a prick. The only characters that avoid this are Plankton, Squidward (the only good characters) and Sandy (who is bland). That’s much of what I have to say for the negatives in this film, now to the positives. The animation is great, the film is self-aware (that’s not always good, but it works well here), Antonio Balderas is fantastic, some jokes work well, and most of the film is centered around Plankton and SpongeBob when the plot decides to take a vacation, which is a good duo. To conclude I would give this film five out of ten. I am lost to how this film is higher on the tomatometer than its superior prequel, but this film manages to still capture some of that charm and humor that made me love SpongeBob in the first place.
