Toy Story 4 Trailer 2 Thoughts

  • No doubt primarily caused by Pixar's misfires over the decade, people have been viewing this film as jumping the shark, no more than a cynical cash grab. But I think what's seen as a cash grab will be a success. I think that it's because they are still trying here to make a quality project.
  • This newest trailer ostensibly shows the basic plot of the movie, slightly skewed.
  • I love Forky. He and Gabby Gabby, who seems like she'll be a fun character, are unprecedented new viewpoints, new perspectives. A toy with identity crisis who's just trying to figure it all out, and even when he thinks he has an answer, he's still unsure. And Woody helping him, not fixating about his own status at a toy, shows how far he's grown since the first movie.
  • That shot of Andy playing with Buzz and Jessie was beautiful.
  • We also saw a brief glimpse of Keanu Reeves' driver character; I'm curious as to how he'll play into it, presumably another independent toy.
  • I'm surprised at Bo Peep's new philosophy, but then again, it's been a while since we've seen her.
  • I'm worried about it being a bit too derivative of Toy Story 2, with the fundamental conflict of Woody being tempted by a different lifestyle. I sincerely hope that there's more to it.
  • "I was made to help a child. I don't remember it being this hard." I wonder what exactly Woody means by this, but it's already gripping due to Tom Hank's voice acting. The latter half, is of course, referring to Woody's temptation. But does it also mean that the purpose of a toy is to be a companion for those growing up; fuel for imagination? That they are a kind of training wheel? That they are a reflection of their child?
  • The first Toy Story was about friendship. Toy Story 2 dealt with themes of mortality and 3 dealt with facing the inevitability of obsolescence. All three themes are intertwined with each movie, of course.

My favourite things: the tragedy of Oddworld, a lost classic

Oddworld was intended to be a grand sweeping epic. Of that ambitious vision, only a small sliver has been released. I imagine to most people it's good, but not anything noteworthy. Oddworld is a legendary franchise, a video game series that has flown under the radar. It is made by now-indie video game developers Oddworld Inhabitants. It is engaging both as a video game, and as a greater story waiting to be unraveled. It is a story that has not, and most likely will not, reached its true potential. That is because the video games have not yet had the opportunity to delve into the mythos of the universe. Oddworld is a story about an alien world, and a rebellion against the Magog Cartel, a consumerist collection of monumental and monstrous corporations using slave labour.  The five installments were to be called the Oddworld Quintology. In each installment, we get introduced to a new character and we go higher up the food chain as the stakes escalate. The old world unravels in reform.

The War of the Worlds

H.G. Wells 1897 science-fiction classic War of the Worlds has been adapted countless times. Most notable are the 1953 film, Spielberg’s 2005 version, Orson Welles’s 1938 radio play, and the latest stellar BBC rendition. It's about humanity being attacked by aliens; the archetypal story of the alien invasion plot so present and popular in modern media and science-fiction. It’s the first of its kind. Interestingly, every adaptation follows a different cast of characters; only the alien invasion and parts of the plot stay relatively consistent. The setting also changes, typically to be more relevant to contemporary life. Instead of Victorian England, it’s 1953 California or Edwardian England, for example. This is an unusual way to handle adaptations.  The story concludes with a twist, this being that, for all of their might and technological superiority, they are defeated at the film's end by Earth bacteria. Gabriel Dropout/Dropkick on My Devil

  I lately saw these two comedy anime, both based off of manga. I found them really funny. Both shows have similarities and are also reminiscent of the anime Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, a series I am a big fan of, despite its unfortunate problematic elements (neither Gabriel Dropout nor Dropkick on My Devil have those kinds of elements). Both series are about they are about angels and demons coming over to the human world, in the slice-of-life genre. Both shows deal with folklore and mythos, which is always welcome. Gabriel Dropout follows two high-achieving angels who are sent to Earth via their student exchange program. Upon arrival, the main character Gabriel, almost immediately becomes addicted to gaming, losing her angelic disposition in favour of a misanthropic, slovenly, and lazy demeanour. The other angel, Raphiel, becomes a sadist. Then they meet two demons, Vignette and Satania. Vignette is a polite and kind person, ironically being more like an angel in behaviour rather th
