Doom Patrol

"Look, we all want to find the Chief. To find the Chief we gotta go through Mr. Nobody. And I think we can all agree, if we don't get our sh*t together, right here, right now, Mr. Nobody is gonna f*ck us! He's gonna  f*ck  us in our brains, he's gonna  f*ck  us in our hearts, he's gonna  f*ck  us in our souls! Now, I don't know what kind of freaky sh*t that your souls are into, and I don't want to judge, but I want to keep my soul un f*ck ed!" The niche superhero group Doom Patrol is not on anybody's radar. I didn't know myself about them until a year ago. Even those who do know them only know them because they're affiliated with DC's Teen Titans (Teen Titan Beast Boy was formerly in the Doom Patrol). To cut to the chase, DC's streaming service has adapted the comic-book team, and it's absolutely incredible. Season 3 of the popular animated series ‘Young Justice’ on the same exclusive platform is also incredible, but that&#

Toy Story 4 Trailer 2 Thoughts

No doubt primarily caused by Pixar's misfires over the decade, people have been viewing this film as jumping the shark, no more than a cynical cash grab. But I think what's seen as a cash grab will be a success. I think that it's because they are still trying here to make a quality project. This newest trailer ostensibly shows the basic plot of the movie, slightly skewed. I love Forky. He and Gabby Gabby, who seems like she'll be a fun character, are unprecedented new viewpoints, new perspectives. A toy with identity crisis who's just trying to figure it all out, and even when he thinks he has an answer, he's still unsure. And Woody helping him, not fixating about his own status at a toy, shows how far he's grown since the first movie. That shot of Andy playing with Buzz and Jessie was beautiful. We also saw a brief glimpse of Keanu Reeves' driver character; I'm curious as to how he'll play into it, presumably another independent toy. I'

My favourite things: the tragedy of Oddworld, a lost classic

Image
Oddworld was intended to be a grand sweeping epic. Of that ambitious vision, only a small sliver has been released. I imagine to most people it's good, but not anything noteworthy. Oddworld is a legendary franchise, a video game series that has flown under the radar. It is made by now-indie video game developers Oddworld Inhabitants. It is engaging both as a video game, and as a greater story waiting to be unraveled. It is a story that has not, and most likely will not, reached its true potential. That is because the video games have not yet had the opportunity to delve into the mythos of the universe. Oddworld is a story about an alien world, and a rebellion against the Magog Cartel, a consumerist collection of monumental and monstrous corporations using slave labour.  The five installments were to be called the Oddworld Quintology. In each installment, we get introduced to a new character and we go higher up the food chain as the stakes escalate. The old world unravels in reform.

Underrated Disney Films

Treasure Planet is an underrated film. While, as Roger Ebert noted, the science fiction elements come off as somewhat gimmicky, it is still astonishing animation-wise and heartwarming story-wise. The film could have been set in its initial mundane reality, and little about the story would change; the film could have done the more difficult task of painting the reality of the seas in a different and adventurous light. However, this is a minor issue. The setting is otherwise impressive in its scope and imagination. The animation is traditional 2D blended in with 3D-animation, and both are seamlessly combined. The themes of fatherhood and the character arc of classic villain Long John Silver serve as a successful driving force of the movie. Jim Hawkins, the protagonist, goes through a classic coming-of-age story. The Hunchback of Notre Dame was an ambitious story for Disney. The main weakness of the film is that its format as a Disney film renders it unable to commit 100% to the darkness

SpongeBob and the Simpsons

I adore SpongeBob SquarePants and The Simpsons. For some adults, SpongeBob on the TV appeared to be just noise, insipid. I think that's unfair. It was a great comedy series with charming characters and quotable lines. It was Stephen Hillenburg's (the creator and former marine biologist) way of expressing his love for marine life. It was surprising adult in some scenes and jokes, as is the case with several kids’ media. (For example, they have an episode wherein SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs believe they killed the health inspector and try to cover it up, burying his body.) Regarding the show as a whole, one internet personality theorized that part of the charm of the show was the differing perspectives between SpongeBob and Squidward. Squidward represented a cynical adulthood, while SpongeBob represented the naiveté and joy of childhood; both perspectives everyone could see themselves in. Kids were SpongeBob and grew up to become Squidward. This is not to dictate; adults still have
